Audiobook of A Box of Magick

I’m living the dream. I have always wanted to read a book I wrote. I got that opportunity last week when I went to Dream Machine LB to record A Box of Magick. Four days from 9am-3pm of roll recording, meaning that I read my book one chapter at a time. When I flubbed up, I went back to a natural pause, such as a new sentence, and begin again. Two producers listened with heartfelt attention and professional dedication while I read: Jeff Mack, the producer from Sounds True, and Derek Poulsen, the studio producer. When I reached the end of the chapter, Jeff and Derek suggested “pick ups,” which are sentences that I wasn’t clear or perhaps there was background noise (like when I got nervous and started rubbing the chair arms - it was very good mic).

I began my writing career writing articles for children - I wanted to encourage them to keep their wonder alive. Afterall, many of our spiritual journeys take us back to that childlike wonder, faith and hope. I volunteered at the library to read books to children for months to become a better writer. When my own children came along, our nighttime reading sessions were an easy half an hour. I love narrating. Whenever I got stuck reading A Box of Magick, I picked up one of the pictures of my children and read the words to them - just as I have been teaching them Magick for years.

The studio was less than 4 miles from the Eye of the Cat witch shop, my sixth grade teacher (whom I stayed with during this visit), and the home of my mentor Connie DeMasters, my Elder Wiccan High Priestess. I visited Connie for three years of magickal instruction on how to live as a Witch in this world - not only during rituals, but everyday life. A Box of Magick chronicles that mentor mentee relationship with instructions, rituals and spells on living the Magick.

Now, twenty years later, I plucked grass and clover from her front lawn and brought it to my altar. I was surprised to see how small the grass area was where we held her Rite of Passage. Everything about Connie’s magickal education was bigger than life.

Many magickal curios wanted to support my journey and adorn my altar. I chose the ones that I had with me when I received my Wiccan tutelage: the black tourmaline, the aloe plant pup planted with Kobe’s placenta, the chalice with Sabbat knotwork, felted fairies, pictures of myself and children when I was in my mid-30s, a picture of Connie and one of my soul sister Melinda who is also on the other side, and the note from Connie’s daughter Alexa that came with the 23 pound box of magickal curricula and education that inspired this book. Clary sage sat on the altar closest to me to help me make wise decisions during my narration. Rose quartz kept my focus on self-love. I burned a white sage leaf, consulted the crystal skull, and lit a white candle in the Goddess shaped bottle of damiana liqueur for every session as I cried, laughed, and played with different voices during the glorious reading of A Box of Magick.

A Box of Magick audiobook and paperback will be available on September 26, 2023.

“This book is written with so much care and love, you can read it on every page. I loved how the introduction weaves a story of how this book and the title came to be and how it represents not only the author's mentor's life but a life of magic. This book has so much to offer; anyone who is interested would surely be able to find something in this book that resonated with them. I love this book and what a tremendous addition to the genre!” - NetGalley
